SEVENTEEN

But by golly, I didn’t!

“Lulu, you’re a genius with makeup,” I said as I stared at my new face in the cracked mirror of the dressing table. “I wouldn’t recognize me if I saw me on the street.”

“You look great as a redhead,” she said, stepping back a pace and smiling at her handiwork.

“Maybe you could get a job as a makeup artist in the flickers. I’m pretty sure all those actors and actresses don’t put on their own makeup for movies.”

Lulu wrinkled her brow. “I never thought about doing something like makeup,” she admitted. “All I ever thought about was being an actress.”

“If you got a job as a makeup artist, you wouldn’t be fired when you got old,” I pointed out. “If an actress gets too old, they don’t let her appear in the flickers any longer. It’s such a hellish business.” I stopped myself before I got carried away again.

“Interesting. How can I find out about being a makeup artist?”

“Show me to Harvey, Sid, and Ernie,” I said. “We’ve got to go back to Helen’s boudoir anyway to get our assignments. Harvey and Sid will probably want to hire you on the spot.”

“Golly, you really think so?”

“Don’t know, but so far in this one morning, you’ve done a spectacular job on yourself and me. I think you’d make more money as a makeup artist than a receptionist, too, although don’t take my word for it. I guess it depends on how many pictures you get hired to do makeup for. Did that make any sense?”

“Yeah,” said Lulu, losing some of her earlier enthusiasm. “It made sense.”

“I’m truly impressed, Lulu,” I told her, rising from the dressing-table chair. I wanted to keep looking at my reflection. I looked better as a redhead than I looked as a normal, brown-haired, blue-eyed female.

Hmmm. Perhaps I could ask Lulu to give me tips on my own makeup habits. I don’t suppose it was entirely frivolous to want to look good‍—as well as professional and efficient‍—at the office.

“Eeek!”

The eeking came from Lulu and me at the same time. We’d been so occupied changing me from myself into a glamorous redhead, we’d neglected to remember Sid had told us he was sending a grip‍—Roger? I couldn’t remember‍—to guard our little room.

“Cripes!” said the poor grip, leaping about a yard in the air.

Lulu planted a hand over her no-doubt thundering heart. “Who’re you?”

Then I remembered “Oh, I’m so sorry we frightened you,” I said, laying a hand on the poor lad’s shoulder. “Are you Roger?”

“Uh, yes. I’m Roger Hollis. Mr. Lafayette sent me to stand outside the door and make sure nobody else could get in.” He held up a padlock. “I’ve gotta lock the door before I take you back to the set.

“Thanks, Roger,” said Lulu, allowing her hand to drop to her side. Her heart was probably still beating hard. I know mine was. “We didn’t mean to scare you. We forgot you were going to be there.”

“Yeah,” said Roger. “I figured as much.
